THE NEW INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY:
EXHIBITION 2
Sept 19 - Oct 3
It is proposed that the second exhibition of The New International Society (NIS) will take place this
September 19th through October 3rd 2015, at Camille Gallery, Detroit, MI—the project space associated with the Detroit Museum of New Art (MONA).
NIS features fifteen emerging, established, and mid-career artists from a variety of nationalities and media: painting, sculpture, video, photography, and performance. Although its associate members live throughout the world, the operations center of the group and its chief curators and artists, Edouard Steinhauer (Haiti), Marina Arbenz (Switzerland), and myself (USA), reside permanently in Berlin.
While NIS’s first exhibition sought to bring Detroit art to the Berlin scene, NIS’s second exhibition seeks to bring Berlin art to the Detroit scene. Although the group is international in scope, many of the artists are expatriates, and call cities such as Berlin, New York, and Detroit their homes.
NIS’s first exhibition occurred this year during Berlin Gallery Weekend at Gallery 161 Torstrasse. The
exhibition was a huge success and we received both press from Berlin’s RadioEins and RBB’s Abendschau. We were also able to sell some paintings and increase networks for associate members.
The intention of this group and exhibition series is to strengthen the ties between international artists, and relative cities such as Berlin, Detroit, New York, Toronto, and Dublin.
Additionally NIS questions the role of curators, museums, and galleries: can artists fund and create their own exhibitions, schools, and museums outside of the influence of the market?
Lastly, this group and exhibition series is really about the artists themselves. Introducing their work to new cities and platforms, expanding their personal networks, and increasing career and artistic opportunities.
First Berlin, second Detroit, third…? This is just the beginning.
