"This is a story, not only about one of the more than 2 million diagnosed Americans that suffer from schizophrenia. But, also about the healthy adult child of a mentally ill parent and the journey we travel together. Anger has long since been replaced with compassion, for I understand she simply wants what we all strive for: love and acceptance." - Judi Bommarito
Judi Bommarito is a Metro Detroit photographer currently immersed in a photo documentary series that confronts and challenges the stigma connected to mental illness titled, "The SPACE Between the Cracks."
The juxtaposition of imagery and her mother’s words reveal the poignant message of universal longing for love and acceptance. It is Judi’s intent to give integrity and validity not only to her mother Julia, but to all those who for one reason or another have chosen to quietly fall between the cracks.
This series has received numerous awards including finalist nomination for the Julia Margaret Cameron Award. Also, grand prize and juror selection recognition by juror, Mary Ellen Mark, in the Professional Women’s Photography International Competition.
